What is Golden Milk?

Golden Milk, also known as turmeric latte or turmeric milk, is a spicy drink from Indian cuisine. It consists of milk and turmeric.

The drink is now known all over the world and is prepared in different ways everywhere. In addition to turmeric, many recipes include other spices. A sweetener is also added. In addition, cow’s milk is often replaced with a vegan milk alternative.

The drink is called “golden milk” because of the bright yellow color that turmeric gives it.

Which milk to use for turmeric latte?

Traditionally, turmeric latte is made with cow’s milk. However, you can use a plant-based milk alternative instead.

I made my Golden Milk with soy drink. Another milk substitute, such as almond milk, pistachio milk, oat milk, cashew milk, hazelnut milk, coconut milk or rice milk, is also suitable.

Spices and their quantities

The basic spice for Golden Milk is turmeric. For more flavor and aroma, you can also add other spices. I used ginger, cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper. Depending on your taste, you can leave out certain spices or add some more. You can also buy ready-made Golden Milk spice mixes.

It is important not to overdo it with the amount of spices for turmeric latte. Above all, you should not use too much turmeric. Otherwise the drink will simply taste bitter and not at all tasty. It’s better to use less at the beginning and spice up your Golden Milk later.

Instead of ground and dried turmeric and ginger, you can also use fresh turmeric and ginger root. Peel them and grate them finely. Note that both spices taste more intense fresh than in powder form. You may therefore want to reduce the quantity.

Sweeten Golden Milk

You can optionally sweeten your turmeric milk. I have used agave syrup in the recipe. Maple syrup, honey and date paste are also suitable. Determine the amount yourself according to your taste.

Homemade turmeric milk

Enjoy hot and cold

When it’s cold outside, the homemade Golden Milk warms you from the inside. Enjoy it hot on uncomfortable fall and winter days. You can also froth the turmeric latte. Then it tastes particularly creamy and airy.

However, the turmeric milk is also delicious cold. Serve it with ice cubes on hot summer days, alongside the homemade lemonade or the homemade iced tea. This gives you a refreshing and healthy drink to cool you down.

Incidentally, the turmeric latte also tastes delicious in coffee. Give it a try!
