What is khrenovina sauce?

Khrenovina is a Russian hot sauce made from horseradish and tomatoes that originates from Siberia. It is usually prepared cold without cooking. However, there are also recipes involving boiling.

The name “khrenovina” comes from the word “khren”, which translates from Russian as “horseradish”. The sauce is also known by other names, such as khrenodyor or gorlodyor.

Determine the spiciness

Khrenovina sauce usually tastes very hot. However, depending on your taste, you can adjust the amount of horseradish and garlic yourself. Bear in mind that these two ingredients ensure that the sauce keeps for a long time. So the less you use, the quicker you should use up the khrenovina sauce.

How to serve and store

The tomato horseradish sauce goes perfectly with hearty main courses. It is particularly popular served with pelmeni or plov.

In addition to the zucchini caviar and the eggplant caviar, the khrenovina sauce is also delicious as a spread. Try it on freshly baked white bread or baton.

The tomato horseradish sauce is also ideal as a dip, for example for vegetarian fritters and flatbreads such as naan bread or kebab bread. It is a must for barbecues, along with the refrigerator pickles, the Russian carrot salad and the Russian beet salad.
