So juicy, with a crispy crust, spicy, with a real taste of the sea – this vegan tofu fish tastes delicious. It is ideal with a vegetable salad as a main course for lunch and dinner or with bread as a snack between meals. You can find a detailed vegan fish recipe with the exact quantities and step-by-step instructions below.
Vegan fish with sea flavor
This vegan fish has the typical taste and aroma of the sea, even though it doesn’t contain any fish. It has algae to thank for this. It is similar with the vegan black caviar, the carrot lox, the vegan sprats, the vegan Shuba salad and the vegan tuna salad.
I used nori sheets, which are also used to make sushi, and dulse flakes for the recipe. But you can also make the vegan tofu fish with nori alone or with wakame.
How to serve it?
The vegan fish is filling and, alongside the rosemary roasted potatoes, the buckwheat with mushrooms and the vegetarian pelmeni, is ideal as a wholesome main meal. It tastes delicious with a few squeezes of lemon juice. It goes very well with a vegetable salad.
You can also use the tofu fish to satisfy small appetites in between meals. On bread, for example on homemade whole wheat bread, or in a bun, such as a hamburger bun, it is perfect as an on-the-go snack.
Choose and swap ingredients
With good quality ingredients and plenty of spices, just like for the oatmeal patties, mountain lentil fritters and kidney bean fritters, you can create a delicious vegan tofu fish that can more than hold its own against the original.
Tofu
Use natural tofu that is juicy, mild and tender in taste. It is best to buy it in organic quality or make it at home.
As an alternative to tofu, some vegan fish recipes use salty pickled banana blossom. You must then drain them thoroughly before preparation.
Nori
Nori sheets should also be of high quality. After all, they are the most important ingredient in the recipe alongside the tofu. Buy fresh, young and crispy nori sheets.
Dulse
For even more sea flavor, I have mixed dulse flakes into the marinade. Alternatively, you can use other seaweed. For example, you can use chopped nori sheets or wakame.
Soy sauce
The quality of the soy sauce is also important. It should have a full-bodied taste and be aromatic.
Use a soy sauce that consists exclusively of soybeans, water, salt and possibly wheat. It must not contain any flavor enhancers or preservatives.
Linseed oil
Linseed oil provides more fish flavor. Use virgin and cold-pressed oil. Alternatively, you can use another good quality vegetable oil instead of linseed oil.
Lemon juice
Only use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the marinade, not bottled juice.
Fish seasoning
I have used a ready-made fish spice in the recipe. However, you can also make your own spice mix. Depending on your taste, it can contain onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, grated nutmeg, dried thyme, mustard seeds, dried marjoram, orange and lemon zest, dried parsley and dill, sea salt.
Chickpea flour
I used chickpea flour for the batter. It is healthy and gives the tofu fish a beautiful color. Alternatively, you can use classic wheat flour.
Vegetable oil for frying
Use a high-heat vegetable oil to fry the vegan tofu fish. It must be explicitly stated on the packaging that it is suitable for frying.

Vegan tofu fish
Ingredients
- 200 g natural tofu
- approx. 2 nori sheets
for the marinade
- 1 tsp dulse flakes
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp linseed oil
- 1 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1 tsp fish spice
for the batter
- approx. 120 ml water
- 60 g chickpea flour
- 1 tsp fish spice
for rolling
- chickpea flour
for frying
- vegetable oil
Instructions
- Cut tofu into rectangles about 1 cm thick and not too large (8 pieces in my case) and place them in a sealable glass container.
- Pour soy sauce, linseed oil, lemon juice, dulse flakes and fish spice over the tofu pieces, close the container and shake it so that all the tofu pieces are coated with the marinade.
- Leave the tofu pieces in the marinade at room temperature for about 1.5 - 2 hours, shaking the jar occasionally.
- Cut each nori sheet into approx. 4 strips as wide as the tofu pieces.
- Remove the tofu pieces from the marinade.
- Moisten a nori strip from both sides with the remaining marinade so that it becomes soft and wrap a piece of tofu in the strip. Repeat the process with the remaining tofu pieces and nori strips.
- If the remaining marinade is not enough to moisten the nori sheets, you can also use soy sauce or water.
- In a mixing bowl, mix chickpea flour, water and fish spice to make a slightly runny batter.
- If the batter is too thick, add a little more water. If it is too runny, add more chickpea flour.
- Put some chickpea flour in a clean bowl.
- Roll each tofu piece wrapped in nori sheet in the chickpea flour first, then add it to the batter and turn it so that it is coated on all sides with the batter.
- Pour some vegetable oil into a frying pan and heat it up.
- Fry the vegan "fish" over a medium heat, first on one side and then on the other until golden yellow.
- If you have some of the batter left over, you can spread it by the spoonful over the vegan "fish" in the pan while it is baking on one side and turn it over immediately afterwards. This will give you a thicker, crispy crust.
