When is cookie dough edible?

When preparing edible cookie dough, you should avoid using eggs and a raising agent. It is also advisable to heat the flour in the oven at 120 °C for around 20 minutes beforehand. This kills any bacteria that the flour may contain.

Any toppings to suit your taste

The basic edible cookie dough recipe can be modified as desired. You can experiment with it to your heart’s content.

I prepared the eggless cookie dough with orange flavor. I used freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh orange zest, just like for my orange cookies.

The edible cookie dough also tastes delicious with lemon. Use lemon zest and freshly squeezed lemon juice, similar to the lemon crinkle cookies.

For the basic recipe, simply replace the orange juice with the same amount of milk and leave out the orange zest. Use any toppings you like instead. Ideal toppings include:

  • chopped nuts, for example pistachios, walnut kernels, almonds, hazelnuts or peanuts,
  • chocolate drops or chopped chocolate,
  • caramel sauce – then use less milk,
  • peanut cream,
  • cocoa powder for chocolate cookie dough – replace about 1 tablespoon of flour with 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder,
  • grated coconut – use coconut milk instead of milk for more coconut flavor,
  • colorful sugar sprinkles,
  • nut nougat cream,
  • fruity jam – in this case, reduce the amount of sugar.

How to make edible cookie dough

Vegan edible cookie dough

You can easily make your own vegan edible cookie dough. To do this, replace animal butter with vegan butter or margarine. Instead of milk, use a plant-based drink, such as almond milk or soy milk.

In my recipe, you only need to replace the butter with a plant-based alternative. Instead of milk, I use freshly squeezed orange juice.

Versatile treat

You can simply snack on the edible cookie dough between meals, just like the Russian halva or the Bird’s milk sweets. It is also perfect as a dessert after a meal, just like the apple caramel dessert cups.

You can also use the eggless cookie dough to make cake pops. You may need to use a little more flour for this to give the dough a firmer consistency and make it easier to shape.

The edible cookie dough is also perfect for decorating cakes. To do this, sprinkle small pieces of dough on the desired pastry with a cream. Use it to decorate the naked cake or the semi naked cake, for example.

How to make edible cookie dough: tips and tricks

  • For the basic edible cookie dough recipe, replace the orange juice with the same amount of milk and omit the orange zest. Use toppings of your choice instead. You can find lots of ideas here in the article above.
  • You can adjust the amount of powdered sugar to taste.
  • You can replace powdered sugar with sugar. In this case, use the finest sugar possible and whip the butter and sugar mixture a little longer until the sugar dissolves. Otherwise you will taste sugar crystals in the dough later.
  • When flour is heated, the moisture it contains evaporates, reducing its weight. Therefore, take a little more flour first and only weigh out the required portion after heating.
  • Allow the flour to cool thoroughly after heating and never add it to the butter sugar mixture while still warm. Otherwise your cookie dough will not have the right consistency.
  • The amount of flour specified in the recipe may vary. Add as much flour to the butter mixture in batches until you get a very soft, sticky dough. After chilling, it will no longer be sticky.
  • Only stir the dough briefly until it reaches a homogeneous consistency and not for too long.
  • For vegan edible cookie dough, replace animal butter with vegan butter or margarine in my recipe.
