What is glögg?

Glögg is a Scandinavian mulled wine that is drunk during the cold season in Sweden and elsewhere. It is made from red wine with a dash of aquavit, vodka or rum.

The classic spices are fresh ginger, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Citrus fruits are often added, such as dried orange peel or fresh orange slices. Raisins and peeled almonds are also added to the glögg during preparation or when serving.

Alternatives to Korn

I have prepared the glögg with German Korn. If you want it to be truly Scandinavian, then use aquavit. Alternatively, rum, vodka and brandy are also suitable for the glögg recipe. It is similar with the strawberry liqueur.

Make glögg in advance

You can prepare the Scandinavian mulled wine a few days in advance. After straining, pour it into glass bottles and seal them.

Store the homemade glögg in the fridge. Then pour it into a saucepan and heat it up before serving.

Allow to steep generously

Homemade glögg tastes best when it has been left to infuse for a while. During this time, the spices, fruit and almonds develop their full aroma and flavor and transfer it to the drink. It is similar with the quark stollen and the marzipan stollen.

In my glögg recipe, I have soaked spices, raisins, oranges and almonds in Korn overnight. The next day, it turns into an incredibly fragrant mixture. This makes the Scandinavian mulled wine heavenly aromatic and particularly spicy.

Alternatively, you can also prepare and serve the glögg in one day. In this case, put the spices, raisins, orange slices and almonds in a saucepan with the red wine and sugar and heat while stirring. Then leave the mulled wine to infuse for a few hours in the saucepan with the lid on. Strain it before drinking, add the Korn, rum or vodka and heat it up again.

Step 1:

The day before, soak raisins, almond slivers, orange slices and spices in Korn, rum, vodka or brandy and leave to infuse overnight.

Step 2:

The next day, add red wine, sugar and the mixture with Korn to a saucepan and heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Under no circumstances should you boil the wine!
