Quince and apple jam – recipe with cinnamon and rum

Two popular fall fruits, quince and apple, are combined in this delicious jam. Cinnamon and rum give it a particularly fragrant note. A detailed quince and apple jam recipe with the exact quantities and step-by-step instructions can be found here at the bottom.

Fall is the season of apples and quinces. The two fruits combine very well with each other in terms of taste. You can take advantage of that by making the sweet jam from them.

I used quince and apples in a 2:1 ratio. However, you can change the proportions to taste. For example, use the same amount of quince and apple, just as in the strawberry rhubarb jam recipe.

Replace apple pectin with preserving sugar

If you want to make the quince and apple jam with preserving sugar instead of pectin, you can still use my recipe for it. In this case, replace apple pectin and sugar together with the same amount of preserving sugar 3:1, just like in the sour cherry jam or apricot jam recipe. For the quantities here below in the recipe box, you will thus need 400 g of preserving sugar.

Then add the complete amount of preserving sugar to the quince and apple pieces, heat it slowly and cook the fruit until soft. Now puree it, add cinnamon if necessary and bring it to a boil again for about 1 minute. Then pour the quince apple jam into jars.

More flavor with spices and herbs

I refined my quince and apple jam with cinnamon and a dash of rum. This gives it a special note and even more fall aroma.

Depending on your taste, you can leave out the rum. If you want your jam to taste more like cinnamon, use ground cinnamon, as in the apple bundt cake with cinnamon or the apple caramel dessert cups.

Alternatively, experiment with other spices and herbs. For example, add a few sprigs of thyme to the fruits. By the way, I made the cherry plum jam with mint vanilla flavor and the apple jam with vanilla.

  • with three times as much fruit as sugar,
  • with cinnamon,

  • with apple pectin and ordinary sugar – or with preserving sugar 3:1 possible,

  • ideal on bread, with pancakes, for cakes,
  • perfect to give as a gift, just like the strawberry jam or blackberry jam.

Quince and apple jam recipe with pectin

The quince and apple jam recipe you’ll find in the recipe box here at the end of the post is pretty simple and quick. I made the jam with apple pectin and regular sugar, just like my raspberry jam and rhubarb jam.

Step 1:

First, cut quince and apples into small cubes and mix them with lime juice in a saucepan. Add about half the amount of sugar and heat the fruit mixture until the sugar dissolves. Then steam the fruit with the lid on until it is soft.

Step 2:

Now, finely puree the fruit pieces. Then add the remaining sugar mixed with pectin and cinnamon sticks and boil the fruit mixture for 3 – 4 minutes.

Step 3:

After that, take the saucepan off the stove, add rum and stir it briefly. Pour the hot quince apple jam into sterilized preserving jars and allow to cool.

How to make quince and apple jam: tips and tricks

  • You can also use quince and apples in a 1:1 ratio for the recipe.
  • Apple pectin and sugar together you can replace with the same amount, 400 g, of preserving sugar 3:1. Add the entire amount of preserving sugar to the fruits and cook until soft. After pureeing, bring the fruit mass to a boil again for a short time.
  • Instead of lime juice, you can also use lemon juice.
  • The cooking time of quince depends on its variety. Some varieties of quince need to be cooked longer until they are done, others only briefly.
  • For more cinnamon flavor, use ground cinnamon instead of cinnamon sticks.
  • You can omit cinnamon and rum. You can also add other spices of your choice.

Ingredients
  

  • 800 g pitted quinces
  • 400 g pitted apples
  • 380 g sugar
  • 20 g apple pectin
  • juice of 1 lime freshly squeezed
  • 3 sticks of cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp rum

Instructions
 

  • Cut pitted quince and apples into small cubes and put them into a saucepan.
  • Add freshly squeezed lime juice and stir it.
  • Add 200 g of sugar and cinnamon sticks, stir and heat slowly over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved.
  • Now bring the fruit mixture to a boil, put the lid on the saucepan and steam the fruits for about 10 minutes or longer until the quince and apple pieces are soft.
  • Take the saucepan off the heat, remove the cinnamon sticks briefly and puree the fruits with a hand blender.
  • Mix the remaining 180 g sugar with apple pectin, add it to the fruit mixture and blend.
  • Put cinnamon sticks back into the fruit mixture and bring to a boil while stirring.
  • Cook the quince apple mixture until bubbly, 3 - 4 minutes.
  • Take the fruit mixture off the heat, add rum and stir briefly.
  • Immediately fill the hot quince and apple jam into sterilized preserving jars up to the rim, removing the cinnamon sticks, seal the jars, put them on the lids for about 15 minutes, then turn them and let them cool.
