Homemade apple chips as a gift

Homemade apple chips are a delicious snack and a healthy alternative to classic candies such as the chocolate, the zefir or the halva. In addition to the sugar free chocolate candy bars, they are also ideal as a small gift from the kitchen. For example, you can wrap them in a paper bag with transparent window or a pretty storage jar.

Rub with lemon for a brighter color

If you spread the apple rings on the baking sheets immediately after cutting and place them in the preheated oven, your fruit chips will have a fairly light color. They will only be slightly yellowish.

If you want the baked apple chips to stay white, you can briefly rub each apple slice on both sides with a lemon half immediately after cutting. Squeeze out the lemon juice lightly.

I have made the apple chips both with and without lemon. There is hardly any visual difference between the two varieties.

How to make apple chips

How to make apple chips really crispy?

Pay attention to a few small details and you will get heavenly crispy baked apple chips. It’s similar with making your own vegetable chips.

Cut apples thinly

Cut apples into very thin slices, similar to the potatoes for the potatoes au gratin. I cut them with a sharp knife. You can also slice the apples with a vegetable slicer.

Dry on a low heat with door slightly open

Dry the apple rings slowly in the oven at a low temperature. In my case, they were in there for about 5 – 6 hours at 212 °F. This will give you very crispy apple chips.

The vitamins contained in the apples are not lost due to the low heating. The dried apple rings also retain their light color.

Leave the oven door ajar for the first two hours of drying. This is because a lot of moisture is removed from the apple slices, especially at the beginning. The steam can escape through the open door. Over the next few hours, you can briefly open and close the oven door from time to time.

Apple rings must not overlap

You should arrange the apple slices individually next to each other on the baking sheet. They must not overlap. This allows them to dry evenly and become crispy.

Baking time may vary

Depending on the oven, how thick the apple slices are and how juicy the fruit is, the drying time of the apple chips can vary. Just take an apple ring out of the oven from time to time and try it. When it is crispy enough, your apple chips are ready.

How to store dried apple rings?

You can enjoy the homemade baked apple chips immediately after they have cooled down. If you have any left over, wrap them airtight and store them in a dry place. The crispier you have dried them, the longer they will keep.

If your dried apple rings become soft and no longer crispy after a few days, you don’t have to throw them away. Dry them again in the oven for a while. You can also put them in the switched-off, warm oven after you have baked a cake in them, such as the vegan chocolate cake.

Experiment with other fruits

Instead of apples, you can also use other fruits for the recipe. For example, make your own banana, mango or strawberry chips. The more watery your fruit is, the longer the chips need to be dried.

Refine with spices

The homemade baked apple chips taste delicious on their own. However, you can also refine them with spices.

Sprinkle the apple chips with cinnamon after baking, for example. This gives them a Christmassy note and even more flavor, similar to my mandarin jam.
